        About Me

        • Leonardo Cocchi is a retired employee of the University of Pisa, where he served primarily at the Department of Biology and the Botanic Garden as assistant curator. He holds a Master’s Degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Pisa, with a thesis focused on the migration of passerine birds on the Isle of Capraia (Tuscan Archipelago), as part of the PPI ringing project.
Leonardo Cocchi’s professional experience spans various fields, including bird migration studies using ring marking techniques in collaboration with ISPRA, bird monitoring, scientific outreach in Botanic Gardens, and research on plant-bird interactions. He is an active member of several scientific organizations, including CISO, the Italian Society of Biogeography (Società Italiana di Biogeografia), the Italian Society of Ethology (Società Italiana di Etologia), and the Tuscan Society of Natural Sciences (Società Toscana di Scienze Naturali), based in Pisa.

Some of his recent contributions to his areas of expertise include:
          • Considerazioni sul monitoraggio degli uccelli dell’Orto Botanico di Pisa negli anni 2012-2023 e conferma del declino della presenza del Torcicollo (Jinx torquilla, AVES: Piciformes: Picidae). XLIII Congresso della Società Italiana di Biogeografia, Grosseto, 2024.
          • A rare case of inter-specific parental care in birds: chick adoption by Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) in favour of Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus). XXX Convegno della Società Italiana di Etologia, Torino, 2024.
          • Aspects of phenology and moult in the Mediterranean Shag (Gulosus aristotelis desmarestii) at two Tuscan sites. XXI Convegno Italiano di Ornitologia, Varese, 2023.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Leonardo Cocchi spent his childhood there before moving to Italy, where he now resides in Livorno.
In his free time, he enjoys reading, photographing with his Nikon digital cameras (having previously been a dedicated Canon film enthusiast in his youth), and spending time with his family, which includes two daughters, a son, a wife, a rabbit, and a parrot that often keep him company. He is also a dedicated fan of the Livorno Calcio football team, “Le Triglie Amaranto,” and eagerly awaits better seasons ahead. Recently, he has been devoting more time to playing his Fender Jaguar electric guitar.
